We realize that some of you are new to scouting. So we would like to explain what it is that we are trying to accomplish this year. By now you should have the Bear Cub Scout book. Please take the time to read the parent guide section in the front. On page 8 the book talks about Akela. Akela is the boys leader. At home, that is you; at den meeting it is the den leader; at school, it is the teacher. Almost all electives and achievements are done by you and your Cub Scout at home, not in the den meeting. The goal this year is to achieve our Bear badge. If you are new in scouting you must first achieve the Bobcat badge. The Bobcat badge is earned by learning the Cub Scout Promise, the Law of the Pack, and the Cub Scout Motto. In addition you will complete the exercises in the booklet - How to Protect Your Children From Child Abuse. Returning scouts should already have the Bobcat badge.

Bear Badge:

To achieve the Bear badge you must complete 12 achievements (page 22). You can pick the ones you want to do from four different groups:

God - do one

Country - do three

Family - do four

Self - do four

We will be working on these as a den. However, it would be better to work on these as a family because you can go at your own pace and choose the achievements that are fitting to you and your scout. In the back of your book you will see a chart where you can view and record your scout's progress toward the Bear badge. Please record your son's progress from home, den activities and outings. Bring it to each den meeting so to show your leader your progress. Remember, at home you are Akela and have the ability to approve the completion of each requirement!  Our goal is to complete this by the Blue & Gold Banquet in February. Then we can start on the Arrow Point Trail.

Arrow Point Trail:

Any achievements that you have not completed on the Bear Trail, as well as the Arrow Point Trail electives can be used towards arrow points. After completing the first ten electives your scout will receive a Gold Arrow Point. Silver Arrow Points can be earned for each ten electives completed thereafter.
